This custom shop Hamer Studio Special Goldtop is one of my favorite electric mistresses. I waited nearly a year for it when I ordered it in '97... it was really worth the wait! What makes it different from a regular factory model is the one piece Gotoh 510 stop tailpiece and the Sperzel locking tuners.
If you aren't familar with this particular guitar, it feautures a mahogany body and neck, maple top and ebony fingerboard. The neck profile has a nice 50's Gibson feel to it, the body shape of course is style after Gibson's late 50's Les Paul double cutaway. It's as close to being a Gibson without being one I guess. Ummmm yummy!
It sports a pair of Seymour Duncan P90 hot soapbar single coil pickups. Though a bit noisy, these pickups are pretty great sounding for my bluesy rock tones. My Dr Z amp is especially fond of these and the rear pickup in solo mode will give you a sunburn and make you cough up phlegm. It has a very fat midrange sizzle that I absolutely love... definately rockin' blues approved!
I also like the way the electronics are wired. 2 volumes and 1 tone controlled by a 3 way switch. My only complaint is that they used a pesky & unreliable barrel style jack on this guitar instead on the simple 1/4" jack on a square mounting plate like you would normally see on a Les Paul.
I would like to publicly note that I have been duly been put on notice by my guitar tech Chris Rogers, that... "one of these nights, right in the middle of a solo, that crappy ass jack is gonna die on you and you're really gonna be pissed... mark my words!" More about Chris later!
